After more than 20 years of continuous development, FreeCAD has announced a historic milestone: version 1.0 is officially released. This open source CAD software loved by users around the world now supports all mainstream platforms, including Windows, Mac and Linux, and its source code is hosted on the GitHub platform.
FreeCAD version 1.0 successfully addresses two long-standing technical issues: the topology naming problem and the lack of native assembly modules. The topology naming problem has always been considered a weakness of FreeCAD’s parametric design. This time, a major breakthrough was achieved thanks to the algorithm of community developer Realthunder. The new system improves the model’s ability to cope with topological changes and significantly improves the stability and reliability of the parametric model.
The introduction of native assembly modules is another highlight. This module integrates the Ondsel solver, capable of accurately handling the assembly of complex components, significantly improving the applicability of industrial scenarios.
FreeCAD 1.0 has undergone a major user interface update, delivering a series of new features designed to improve operational fluidity and visual experience:
- Center of Rotation Indicator: It allows users to accurately locate the center of rotation of the model in the 3D view.
- Selection filter options: More flexible selection tools improve the efficiency of editing complex models.
- Dark and light themes: adapt to different usage scenarios and make users’ operations more comfortable.
Additionally, various FreeCAD workbenches have also received varying degrees of functional improvements:
- Arch Workbench: Added BIM (Building Information Modeling) function to provide more professional tools for architectural and structural design.
- Path Workbench: Officially renamed **CAM**, further enhancing precision manufacturing support capabilities through optimization.
- Sketcher Workbench: New offset tools and contextual dimensioning capabilities streamline the sketching workflow.
- Part Workbench: Mirroring and scaling tools have been improved and the operating logic is more intuitive.
- TechDraw Workbench: Introduces snapping features and new drawing tools to make creating technical drawings more efficient.
To reflect the spirit of the times, the FreeCAD community has also designed a new logo for the software to give it a new visual look. At the same time, FreeCAD 1.0 has been fully optimized for the Python API, improved material management functions and many additional tools have been added. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced user, you will find the functional support that suits you in this version.
As a free, high-performance design tool, FreeCAD is changing the landscape of professional CAD software, making it easy for more people to achieve professional-level design capabilities. If you want to know more and download, you can go to
