Your SCX24 Body Shaping Journey: Step by Step

  1. Concept and design:

    • software: Start with a free/accessible CAD package such as Tinkercad (for beginners) or Fusion 360 (for more advanced). Blenders are great for organic shapes. Research existing SCX24 chassis dimensions (wheelbase, width, shock/tower location) – accurate measurements are crucial!
    • Find files: Platforms like Thingiverse, Printables, and Cults3D are treasure troves. search "SCX24 body," "1/24 crawler body," or specific model name. Always check compatibility! Or, design from scratch – this is beneficial.
    • Design considerations:

      • Install: How will it attach? Wraparound bumper using stock clips? Custom magnetic mount? Internal post? Designed to be installed securely.

      • ABS: Very durable and temperature resistant, but requires an enclosed printer due to deformation and fumes. It is more difficult to perfect.
      • Flexible material (TPU): Ideal for bumpers, side panels or flared fenders that need to flex in an impact. Printing speed is generally slower.
    • Printer settings: optimization! Lower layer heights (0.12mm-0.2mm) produce a smoother painted surface. Increase girth (3-5) for increased strength. Use medium fill (10-20% gyro/line). Strategically enable supports for overhangs. Adhesion (edge/raft) is key. Carefully calibrate the extrusion flow rate.

  3. Perfect post-processing:

    • Support removal: Carefully cut away the supports. Use a flat end mill and fine sandpaper (220+ grit) to sand the marks.
    • Polishing: Work through grit sizes (e.g., 220 -> 320 -> 400 -> 600) to achieve a paintable finish. Pay special attention to layer lines and seams. Wet sanding helps avoid abrasion dust.
    • clean: Remove all dirt/grease – IPA wipe works well (check material compatibility).
    • Painting and surface treatment:

      • Primer: Basic! Fills minor defects and provides adhesion. Apply in thin layers, sanding lightly between layers if needed.
      • Primer: Use quality hobby paint. Multiple shallow layers > single thick layer. Next move on to decals.
      • Clear Coat: Protect your paint job! Glossy, satin or matte depending on desired finish.

  4. Install your creation:

    • Test continuously throughout the entire build process!
