It’s a systematic approach: from understanding the printing material (PLA, ABS, resin, metal) and layer heights, to employing a continuous sand progression and appropriate techniques. Sandpaper is the workhorse, but its effectiveness depends on clever application. Ignoring this step can make parts look amateurish; mastering it can elevate them to functional prototypes or production quality for end use.

Demystifying Sandpaper Grit: Your Roadmap to Smoothing

Sandpaper is marked with a grit number – this is the backbone of your finishing strategy:

  • Coarse grain size (40-150): Base. Aggressively address prominent layer lines, major bumps, and support scars. Essential for starting a resin print or rough FDM part. warn: Use with caution! Corrosive sand particles can easily gouge soft plastics such as PLA.
  • Medium particle size (180-320): The main transition area. Smoothes out scratches left by rough paper and further smoothes out obvious irregularities. Crucial before preparing for priming or painting.

  • Avoid Garnet/Course Weak Thesis: Garnet dulls quickly on plastic and creates uneven scratches. Cheap, flimsy paper tears easily and has less control.

Pro tips for perfect hand sanding:

  1. Pressure and Patience: Let the sandpaper do the work. Heavy pressure can cause uneven spots, dents and generate too much heat (melting PLA!). Continuous, light pressure is key.
  2. Circular motion and direction: Best results are achieved by alternating between small, tight circular movements (for effective leveling) and following the contour/orientation of the part (for ultimate smoothness). Avoid long linear strokes parallel to the layer lines.
  3. The power of water (for PLA/resin): Slight Dob Wet Rubbed PLA and Wet/dry paper significantly reduces dust ingestion, prevents clogging (extending paper life), and minimizes heat build-up. Be sure to rinse away residue frequently. WARNING: Water contamination can damage electronic equipment – dry thoroughly immediately afterwards!
  4. Perseverance and progress are sacred: Never jump from 120 mesh to 600 mesh. Skipping levels will leave deeper scratches, resulting in wasted efforts later. Follow a logical sequence: for example, 120 -> 220 -> 320 -> 400 -> 600 -> (optional: 1000+).
  5. Contour support: For curved surfaces, use a softer backed foam block or sanding sponge/flexible pad. Rigid blocks risk flattening details.
